What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda?
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in both Uganda and Rwanda is 15 years old. This age limit is strictly enforced by park authorities to ensure the safety of both the trekkers and the gorillas.
Why is there an age restriction for gorilla trekking?
1. Children may struggle with the demanding hikes through mountainous terrain and dense forests. 2. Gorillas are susceptible to human diseases. Younger children are more prone to colds and flu, which could be transmitted to the gorillas. 3. Gorillas are wild animals, and maintaining calm, quiet behavior during the trek is essential. Children may react unpredictably in close encounters, which could trigger defensive behavior from the gorillas.
Can exceptions be made to the 15-year gorilla trekking age limit?
In most cases, no exceptions are made. However, in Uganda, special exceptions might be considered on a case-by-case basis, especially if the child is very close to 15 and physically fit. Rwanda enforces the age limit more strictly. It’s best to check directly with your tour operator or the national park authority well in advance.
